🎉 Professional Learning in Action! 🧪🔬
Congratulations to Karen Sorensen on presenting at the 2026 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) in Madison, Wisconsin!
This marked the 8th time Karen has been selected to present at science education conferences, continuing her commitment to sharing innovative teaching strategies with educators from across the country.
Karen's presentation, "Baby Powder, Cornstarch, and Powdered Sugar... OH MY!", was featured as part of the symposium "Beyond the Bang: Using Chemistry Demonstrations to Engage Students in 3-Dimensional Learning." Her session demonstrated how common household powders can serve as engaging anchor phenomena to help students investigate the relationship between structure and properties, energy and matter, surface area, reaction kinetics, and collision theory. By connecting exciting chemistry demonstrations to real-world industrial dust explosions, Karen showcased how demonstrations can move beyond the "wow factor" to promote meaningful, three-dimensional learning while emphasizing safe classroom practices.
In addition to presenting, Karen attended numerous conference sessions where she collaborated with science educators from across the nation, explored new instructional strategies, and continued expanding her knowledge of best practices in science education. These experiences will help bring fresh ideas, innovative lessons, and high-quality science instruction back to the classroom and benefit students for years to come.
Congratulations, Karen, on representing Melcher-Dallas, the state of Iowa, and the science education community with excellence. Thank you for your dedication to lifelong learning and for inspiring both students and fellow educators through your passion for science! 👏🧪
