This school year, students at Melcher-Dallas High School welcomed a new face in the sociology and history department: Mrs. Molly Wallace.
Originally from Chariton, Iowa, she has always aspired to become a teacher.“ When I was little, I wanted to be a PE teacher,” she explained, “but I grew older, history became my favorite subject, and I fell in love with it”.
Mrs. Wallace hopes her students will not only succeed in class but also come away with a deeper understanding of how our country has changed over time. “I want them to know the progress we’ve made, the setbacks we’ve faced, and most importantly, how we got to where we are today”, she said.
When asked which historical figure she would most like to meet, she didn’t hesitate to say Abraham Lincoln. “I think he was a great president. He’s always been one of those people who stood out in history for me”.
As a new teacher, she admits students might be surprised by her classroom expectations. “ They may think I’ll be lenient because I’m new, but I actually set clear rules. I don’t want to be strict for no reason. I just want my class to run smoothly”.
Her students are already noticing her teaching style. One student said, “It’s pretty mellow, regular teaching- it’s not too strict or too easy, just balanced. The way she sets up projects makes it simple to stay on track. Her classes feel comfortable for us. I wouldn’t change anything.’’
So far, she has enjoyed the school and its atmosphere. “Everyone has been very kind, and students are wonderful. What really stands out to me are small class sizes. I’m not used to that before, but it is really nice”.
Before joining our school, Mrs Wallace worked as a substitute teacher in Chariton and lived in Nebraska, where she was a paraeducator at both elementary and high school. She also coached golf.
