The Melcher-Dallas School District continues its tradition of honoring veterans with a student-led tribute that will be held on Friday, November 8, at 9 a.m. in the new high school gym. There’s an extra buzz about this year’s event because the event is open to the public for the first time with the gym’s completion.
“Students take great pride in honoring the veterans,” said Cindy Bauer, who brought the idea to the district and has organized the event with students since 2021. The district encourages veterans, relatives and friends in the Armed Forces and community members to attend.
Veterans and their families are invited to gather at 8:15 a.m. in the high school cafeteria for cinnamon rolls and coffee.
A schoolwide program at 9 a.m follows in the gym. Elementary TAG students made the invitations and posters using Canva. Attendees will view junior high and high school student artwork. Students will also be working to park cars and escort veterans and visitors.
Three high school students will serve as hosts for the program and American Legion Post 632 will lead traditional ceremony elements throughout the program. Special music includes performances by Choir Director Dr. Kingrey and the junior high/high school choir. Former Teacher, Coach, Athletics Director and Veteran Mike Elliott, is the keynote speaker. Other special presentations of gratitude and awards are not-to-be-missed.
“It is so important that our kids understand the sacrifices that every soldier makes in serving our country. This is also a great opportunity for our students to step into leadership roles for their community,”concluded Bauer.
