7th graders had the opportunity to meet with Francis Chan, an ambassador for CultureALL to learn about the culture of South Sudan. CultureALL is an Iowa-based non-profit that involves Iowans of all ages in learning about world cultures. They understand that when individuals learn about other cultures, they gain valuable insights that help them better understand, appreciate, and connect with other people. Ambassador Chan was selected to visit the 7th graders because they are currently reading the book A Long Walk to Water, which tells the story of Salva, a young boy that fled the civil war in Sudan. Opportunities like this help students recognize the connections we all share and encourage deeper learning and thinking to our curriculum.
